"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much." Job 38:4

A few summers ago, my son and I visited Enchanted Rock in western Texas. Under the scorching heat of the sun we climbed to the top to look out at the breathtaking view that went on for miles. As I looked out at the panoramic view unable to see beyond the horizon, I suddenly realized just how small we really are. I was reminded of God's question to Job, as he tried to make sense of his situation.

"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much." Job 38:4

God knew exactly where Job was or wasn't when He chose to create the heavens and the earth. God's question was to get Job to realize that there is so much more to God and His plans than what he understood. Like Job, we walk around thinking we know God and His ways, when in reality, we are clueless. In pride, we foolishly think that we know far more than we really do. We run ourselves weary trying to figure things out. We get disappointed, discouraged and depressed when our expectations of how things should be aren’t met. We question. We doubt. We forget that the One who laid the foundations of this earth is still in control and still working.

Scripture tells us that God's ways are higher than ours and that His thoughts are greater than our thoughts. Who can comprehend the mind of God? When I look at life through my shallow view and understanding things will never make sense. God’s view and His vision is so much greater than mine. When I accept my lack of understanding I can begin to find peace, comfort and confidence in knowing that God knows what I don’t. His plans, purposes and presence are good and can be trusted.

The Focal Point: When I look at this vast landscape and distant horizon I am reminded to focus on the truth that God‘s ways are always better than mine!
