The Good Old Days

Don’t long for “the good old days.” This is not wise. Ecclesiastes 7:10

Get a group of long-time friends together and it is almost certain that at some point you’ll hear the phrase “Those were the good old days”. We reminisce over fun times shared with family and friends. Pull out old pictures and not only will stories flow but comments like “Look how much hair you had”; “You were so thin or pretty”; “Look how happy they look”; “I used to love…” If we aren’t careful, we can allow our reminiscing of the past to birth discontentment with our present. This discontentment robs us of the ability to enjoy the blessings God has placed before us. When we long for “the good old days” we are essentially saying, “God, this path you’ve brought me down and all that you have given me now is not good enough”.

Solomon knew that it was unwise to focus on the past. The apostle Paul also spoke of forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead (Philippians 3:13). These men of God knew that forward progress is hindered when we dwell on what has been. If we are to continue to move forward with God, then we must stop longing for things that once were and embrace what is and is yet to come.

The Focal Point: When I look at this photo, reminiscent of a time some might deem the “good old days” I am reminded to thank God for what He’s done and fix my focus on what is to come.
