Water from the Rock

Walking through a park in Montgomery, TX, I came across this beautiful fountain. As I watched the water flow freely from this rock formation, I was reminded of the story in Exodus 17 where the Israelites were parched having wandered through the Wilderness of Sin. They found themselves in a place with no water. Despite all the ways that God had previously provided and the miracle they had experienced with the parting of the Red Sea, they saw their current situation and began to grumble. They knew that without water, they would die, and allowed their fear to steal their focus. They quickly turned, lost hope and began to focus only on what they could see. Instead of looking to God, they complained to Moses. Moses, weary from the people's complaining, turned to the Lord for help. God responded, bringing forth water from a rock, proving once again that nothing is impossible for Him. As I looked at this fountain, I wondered what it must have been like to witness this marvelous expression of God's grace and provision.

Like the Israelites, there are times when I feel parched, not so much in a physical sense, but emotionally, mentally or spiritually. Dryness hits and it seems like there is no water in sight. Forgetting what God has done in the past, things begin to look bleak. Like the Israelites, I may even grumble or complain. But, if I focus on the Lord I will begin to see that He is the very source of the water I need. Jesus is both the Rock of my salvation and the Living Water. He not only is the source, but the very provision as well.

Do you feel parched? Is there an area of your life where you feel dry, unable to find relief? Don't loose hope because the God who brought forth water from a rock is surely able to provide the refreshment your soul needs.

The Focal Point: When I look at this fountain, I am reminded that in times of emotional, mental, spiritual and physical drought, God is able to bring forth springs of living water.
